Federal Government don warn content creators make dem stop the habit of filming people for public places without their permission, say anybody wey break the law fit face prosecution.

For statement wey dem release on March 13, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission talk say the growing trend, especially for Lagos, don raise serious concern about people privacy and fit also break citizens’ rights under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

The commission explain say when content creators record people for public space to create “reality-style” videos for social media without their knowledge, e fit amount to unlawful use of personal data, especially when the people no expect say their images go appear online.

NDPC also talk say filming and posting unsuspecting Nigerians for internet without their consent na violation of privacy law and anybody wey do am fit face legal action.

The commission mention one case of a content creator wey dey reportedly film people wey no know along roadside for Lagos just to create social media content. According to the agency, this kind practice fit be abuse of people privacy rights all in the name of entertainment.

The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, don also direct major social media platforms like TikTok, X and Meta Platforms make dem tighten enforcement of their community guidelines to prevent misuse of people personal data.

The commission add say both the social media platforms and individual content creators fit face sanctions or even criminal prosecution if dem fail to remove or stop content wey violate people privacy.
