The Federal Government of Nigeria has disbursed about N688 billion to more than 9.2 million Nigerians under the Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer (HOPE-CT) programme, as part of efforts to cushion the effects of ongoing economic reforms.

 

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed this while speaking in Abuja, noting that the initiative provides financial support of N75,000 to vulnerable households, paid in three tranches.

 

According to the minister, over 9.17 million beneficiaries have already received the first tranche, while millions have also accessed subsequent payments, with disbursement still ongoing. The programme, which runs from November 2023 to February 2026, is designed to provide targeted relief and improve household resilience.

 

Doro explained that the scheme leverages the National Social Register to identify beneficiaries and requires verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) or Bank Verification Number (BVN) to ensure transparency and accountability in the process.

 

He further revealed that women constitute the majority of beneficiaries, accounting for 58.7 percent, underscoring the programme’s impact on family welfare and community stability.

 

The HOPE-CT initiative is one of the Federal Government’s key social intervention programmes aimed at reducing poverty and supporting vulnerable populations amid economic adjustments.
