The Federal Government has approved an imprest limit of ₦700,000 for Ministers and other members of top management across its Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), in a move aimed at streamlining administrative expenses and ensuring more accountable use of public funds.

 

The new directive, issued by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, sets a ceiling on the amount of cash that can be advanced to top officials to cover operational and incidental costs. This imprest is meant to handle minor, day-to-day government expenses that do not require lengthy procurement procedures.

 

According to government sources, the measure is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen financial discipline within the public sector and promote transparency in the handling of government resources.

 

“The approved imprest limit will enable Ministers and senior officials to manage essential administrative needs without delay, while ensuring that all expenditures remain within clearly defined boundaries,” a senior finance ministry official explained.

 

The policy applies uniformly to Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Directors-General, and other high-ranking officials across federal MDAs. Expenditures from the imprest are expected to be fully retired with receipts and proper documentation in line with public financial regulations.

 

Analysts say the move reflects the government’s commitment to tighter fiscal management at a time of economic pressure and rising demands for accountability in public spending.

 

The implementation of the new imprest limits takes immediate effect.
