The Federal Government has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who recently marked his 90th birthday.

The decision was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who stated that the proposal would be forwarded to the National Assembly for the necessary legislative processes to formalize the change.

Established in January 1988, the University of Abuja was created to provide higher education opportunities aligned with the ideals of the Federal Capital Territory. Academic activities began in 1990 at its mini campus in Gwagwalada, while development steadily progressed at its permanent site along the Abuja-Airport Road. Today, the university operates fully from its main campus, strategically located less than ten minutes from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Often referred to as the University for National Unity, the institution serves as a beacon of inclusiveness, offering education without distinction of race, gender, or political affiliation. Its central location in the nation’s capital further enhances its status and potential as a leading educational institution.
