Enyimba Football Club has appointed former Super Eagles defender and club legend, Uche Okechukwu, MON, as its new Sporting Director, marking a significant leadership change at the nine-time Nigerian champions.

 

The appointment, which follows the resignation of the club’s former Sporting Director, was confirmed in an official letter signed by the Chairman of Enyimba FC. In the letter, the Chairman congratulated Okechukwu on his new role and expressed confidence in his ability to leverage his vast experience, integrity, and deep understanding of the game to reposition the club for sustained success.

 

According to the club’s leadership, Okechukwu’s wealth of experience in football administration, elite competition, and player development is expected to play a crucial role in driving Enyimba’s long-term sporting vision and restoring the club to the summit of domestic and continental football.

 

Fondly known as the “Gentle Giant,” Okechukwu is widely regarded as one of Nigerian football’s most respected figures. He enjoyed an illustrious playing career in Europe with Brøndby IF of Denmark and Fenerbahçe SK of Turkey, where he was admired for his composure, leadership, and defensive excellence. On the domestic front, he featured for Enyimba FC, Flash Flamingoes FC, and Iwuanyanwu National FC, winning several honours.

 

Internationally, Okechukwu was a key member of Nigeria’s golden generation. He played an integral role in the Super Eagles’ 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia and was part of the historic squad that represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, the country’s first-ever appearance at the tournament.

 

In 1996, he further cemented his legacy as one of the three over-aged players in Nigeria’s celebrated “Real Dream Team” that won the football gold medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games, alongside Kanu Nwankwo.

 

Enyimba FC’s management, players, staff, and supporters have welcomed Okechukwu back to the club, expressing optimism that his appointment will usher in a new era of professionalism, progress, and sustained success at the Aba-based club.
