Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on the devolution of power and resources from the federal government to state and local governments, a way of  ongoing out of the economic hardship that Nigerians are facing at the moment

Obasanjo, who was represented by a former Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu, spoke as a guest of honour at the public presentation of the book “Court and Politics,” authored by Dr. Umar Ardo

He said this would help to better manage available resources and alleviate the ongoing economic hardship.

Obasanjo explained that the economic hardship is due to mismanagement of resources and lack of productivity among Nigerians.

The former Nigerian Leader said decentralizing power and resources will reduce competition at the central level and allow for more effective resource management at the local level.

“24 years of practising the presidential system is not enough. The important thing is to devolve power and resources to the states and certain jobs from the federal to state and local governments" he said.

Earlier, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Saturday urged President Bola Tinubu to seek the guidance of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo on how to move Nigeria forward.

The PDP said Nigeria needs a leader who can stir the country towards economic recovery because Tinubu has failed.

According to a statement signed by Usman Okai Austin, National Coordinator of PDP Youths Frontier, said former President Muhammadu Buhari spent eight years in office blaming Jonathan and the PDP, adding that “today, Tinubu and his team are following the same pattern, blaming the APC government under Buhari.”

He said “We require leaders capable of addressing the nation’s current challenges and steering us towards economic recovery and security solutions.

“President Tinubu should seek guidance from experienced leaders like Jonathan and Obasanjo to move the country forward.”

The PDP chieftain emphasized the importance of setting aside differences within the All Progressives Congress, APC, to focus on the well-being of Nigerians.
