The Democratic Republic of the Congo have secured their place at the FIFA World Cup 2026 following a dramatic 1-0 extra-time win against Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff final at the Guadalajara Stadium.

 

Former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute, ensuring DR Congo’s first World Cup appearance in 52 years. Tuanzebe, who was born in Bunia, a city affected by conflict in eastern DR Congo, described the match as the biggest of his career, cementing his place in Congolese football history.

 

The game had been tightly contested, with Cedric Bakambu seeing two goals correctly ruled out for offside during regular time. It was Tuanzebe who capitalized on a corner from Brian Cipenga, with the ball deflecting off Jamaica defender Joel Latibeaudiere before Tuanzebe’s torso nudged it over the line. A VAR check confirmed there was no handball, allowing celebrations to resume.

 

Jamaica, seeking only their second World Cup appearance since France 1998 FIFA World Cup, struggled to create meaningful chances and were unable to force a comeback.

 

DR Congo have been drawn into Group K of the expanded 48-team tournament, opening their campaign against Portugal in Houston on 17 June, before matches against Colombia and Uzbekistan. The historic qualification marks a significant milestone for Congolese football and provides a moment of pride for the nation.
