With just weeks to go before the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, Nigeria has confirmed its participation in four of the six scheduled events, as the nation sets its sights on strong performances and Olympic qualification.

 

The Nigerian team will compete in the men’s 4x100m relay, women’s 4x100m relay, mixed 4x100m relay, and mixed 4x400m relay, according to Israel Inwang Mfon, Secretary of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). He noted that the selection was based on strategic focus on Nigeria’s areas of strength and medal potential.

 

“The Federation made a deliberate decision to enter events where we have a comparative advantage,” Mfon stated. “We are confident in our athletes’ capabilities and optimistic about our chances in Guangzhou.”

 

The World Athletics Relays, scheduled for May 10–11, will feature six events this year, following a streamlined format introduced in 2024. Previously, the competition included non-Olympic events such as the 4x800m, 4x1500m, 4x200m, distance medley relay, shuttle hurdles, and 2x2x400m relays. However, these were removed in favor of focusing solely on Olympic-standard events.

 

The 2025 edition introduces the mixed 4x100m relay for the first time, expanding the competition lineup to six events. Nigeria’s entry into both mixed relay categories underscores a growing commitment to versatility and team depth on the global stage.

 

The Guangzhou Relays will also serve as a qualifying event for the Paris 2025 World Championships and the 2026 Olympic Games, making each event critical for nations aiming to secure their spots early.
