Confluence Queens of Lokoja head coach, Sabo Okala, has admitted that his biggest challenge in assembling a competitive squad is the mass exodus of key players, most of whom were only registered on loan last season.

 

Despite his optimism for a turnaround, Okala revealed to Sports247.ng that replacing 24 regulars who departed at the end of the previous campaign has been a daunting task. The former Honey Badgers FC manager noted that many experienced players who helped the team reach the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super-6 last season left in search of better salaries elsewhere.

 

While acknowledging the struggles of his current squad—who have yet to win a match after four rounds—Okala praised his remaining players for showing promise. He also commended Abia Angels for their deserved 3-0 victory over Confluence Queens on matchday four.

 

“Congratulations to the home team,” Okala said. “They worked hard for the win. But that doesn’t mean we didn’t play well. Losing 24 players was a huge setback. Only six returned, and three got injured before the season started. Then, three key strikers left just before registration.”

 

Okala emphasized the difficulty of rebuilding and attributed the exodus to financial constraints. “Our inability to increase their pay was the main issue. Other states offer better packages, and naturally, players will go where they are paid more. That’s why I’m pleading with the state government to match the offers of other teams.”

 

He also highlighted the problem of relying on loan signings, stressing the need for long-term contracts to ensure squad stability. “Many players come on loan because their managers don’t want to release them permanently. Without proper funding, we can’t buy players outright, which leaves us vulnerable to constant turnover.”

 

Drawing from his experience with Honey Badgers, where he nurtured talents who now play in the premiership, Okala remains hopeful. “Though results aren’t going our way, we take pride in developing young talents and building a solid foundation for the future.”

 

Despite the tough start, Okala remains committed to turning things around, believing that his young squad will eventually rise to the challenge.
