Christy Ucheibe celebrates second trophy of the season with Portuguese League

In an exhilarating conclusion to the 2023/2024 Portuguese Liga BPI campaign, Nigeria international Christy Ucheibe led SL Benfica to clinch the championship on Saturday.

A week ago, the 23-year-old Super Falcons midfielder had won her first trophy of the year 2024 with SL Benfica, clinching the Portuguese Taca da Liga title after a 1-0 victory over Sporting Lisbon thanks to an 83rd minute goal by Chandra Davidson.

Facing off against the debutant Racing Power, spearheaded by Mercy Idoko, Benfica secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the season’s final showdown.

Carole Costa emerged as the hero of the match, netting a crucial brace to ensure Benfica’s retention of the title. Costa struck first from the penalty spot in the 38th minute, setting the tone for Benfica’s determined performance.

Despite a late equalizer by Lucia Lobato for Racing Power in the 85th minute, Benfica remained resolute. In the dying moments of the match, another penalty opportunity arose, and Costa capitalized, sealing the victory with a winning goal in additional time.

Finishing atop the league table with an impressive 56 points from 22 games, SL Benfica secured the title, narrowly edging out Sporting who trailed with 54 points.

Both teams secured coveted berths in the upcoming UEFA Women’s Champions League, setting the stage for future clashes on the European stage. Meanwhile, Racing Power, despite their spirited campaign, fell short of Champions League qualification by 11 points.

For Ucheibe, it marked a memorable season, as she celebrated her second trophy triumph as they relish winning a treble against Racing Power in the League Cup final on May 18.

Furthermore, Benfica’s triumph notched their fourth league title, solidifying their status as a powerhouse in Portuguese women’s football
