Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has shared insights into his unique relationship with former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo.

 

In a reflective post, Charly Boy described their bond as both “funny and beautiful,” noting that he had always viewed the elder statesman as a father figure because of his long and eventful life.

 

According to him, Obasanjo’s life experiences—from soldier to national leader and farmer—have made him a source of wisdom.

 

“For my own mind, I always see am like father figure. The man don live many lives in one lifetime – soldier, leader, farmer, elder. The kind man wey if you sit close to am small, you go hear stories wey carry wisdom like palm wine carry sweetness,” he said.

 

However, Charly Boy revealed that the former president often rejects being addressed as a father figure, insisting instead that they relate as equals.

 

“But Baba no gree that level at all. Each time I talk like that, he go quickly correct me. With that his usual confidence, he go say, ‘No no, Charly Boy… we be brothers,’” he added.

 

Despite the difference in perspective, the entertainer said the mutual respect between them remains strong.

 

He explained that their relationship is built on laughter, honest conversations, and a shared passion for Nigeria.

 

“Maybe that’s the magic of our relationship. I see wisdom of a father. He see strength of a brother. Somewhere between those two things, a rare kind of friendship take root — one built on respect, truth, and shared love for Nigeria,” he said.
