Political leaders from Benue State have expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to enhance national security, signaling a rare show of unity across party lines.

 

This endorsement was disclosed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during a courtesy visit by stakeholders from Kwande and Ushongo Local Government Areas to his residence in Abuja.

 

According to Akume, the delegation included leaders from both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), reflecting a growing bipartisan commitment among Benue stakeholders to back the federal government’s vision for a safer Nigeria.

 

“The security situation in Nigeria has notably improved since President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023,” Akume stated, attributing the progress to coordinated federal responses and renewed political cooperation at the state level—particularly in areas that have historically faced security challenges.

 

He highlighted that past security assessments led by Professor Yilwatda had played a key role in pinpointing violence-prone areas and directing resources effectively. Akume praised local leaders and stakeholders who continue to raise awareness and foster unity in the fight against insecurity.

 

Beyond security, the SGF announced that major infrastructure projects have received federal approval, including the reconstruction of the Makurdi–Yandev–Katsina-Ala road and ongoing works along the Makurdi–Aliade–Otukpo corridor. He emphasized that these developments would not only boost regional connectivity but also aid security operations through improved mobility.

 

“Securing the nation is not the exclusive responsibility of the armed forces,” Akume stressed. “Citizens must actively support security personnel. Peace and safety require a joint effort between government and the people.”

 

He concluded by reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to sustaining peace, rebuilding affected communities, and ensuring development reaches all corners of Benue State. He urged more stakeholders to unite and champion the changes Nigerians expect.

 

“All of us as citizens of this country must be fully engaged in supporting security forces to provide maximum security,” Akume added. “It is not just an issue that can be tackled only by governmental security agencies alone. All of us have a stake in it.”
