Atiku, Obi Sets To Join SDP
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi are reportedly in talks to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP). This comes as no surprise, given the recent influx of high-profile politicians into the party, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
SDP's 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, revealed that representatives of Atiku and Obi are engaging in discussions with the party. Adebayo emphasized the party's openness to new members, stating, "People are joining my party, and we are welcoming them." However, he noted that some politicians may need to adjust to the party's culture, particularly in adhering to internal rules and procedures.
Adebayo expressed confidence that if these politicians can align with the SDP's values and structure, they could offer Nigerians a viable alternative. He also urged potential defectors to conform to the party's internal democratic processes, highlighting the importance of transparency and discipline within the party.
Despite these reports, Peter Obi has maintained that he remains committed to the Labour Party, which was his platform for the 2023 presidential election. Adebayo, however, suggested that discussions are ongoing, stating, "Supposedly, until somebody joins, we don’t know. But people have told me, and the Financial Secretary (SDP) has also informed me, that they are talking.
