President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has reaffirmed the commitment of the federation’s official kits supplier, HiRacer, to redeem a $20,000 cash reward promised to Nigerian sprint sensation Tobi Amusan following her silver medal finish in the 100m hurdles at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

 

Speaking after a meeting held Monday night in Tokyo with Amusan and the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Bukola Olopade, Chief Okowa emphasized that the Federation remains focused on improving the welfare of Nigerian athletes.

 

“There is no problem between Tobi and the Federation. I have worked with her for more than four years. It was just a moment of misunderstanding,” Okowa said, addressing recent speculations surrounding a kits-related controversy. “This new AFN board is responsive to our athletes’ needs. We will do things differently.”

 

The AFN president noted that all issues surrounding the purported kit disagreement have been amicably resolved. He stressed that the federation remains united in its goal of creating a supportive environment for athletes to thrive on the global stage.

 

Okowa further revealed that discussions with HiRacer are at an advanced stage for a more rewarding and long-term kits sponsorship deal. He confirmed the company’s readiness to fulfill its earlier pledge of a $20,000 reward to Amusan for her podium finish.

 

“At the meeting, I again congratulated Tobi Express for her great spirit to grab the silver in the 100 metres hurdles final. It was a moment of pride for Team Nigeria,” he added.

 

Amusan, who currently holds the world record in the women’s 100m hurdles, has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers on the global athletics stage, and her latest achievement in Tokyo further cements her legacy.

 

Meanwhile, Chief Okowa also extended his gratitude to the Director General of the NSC, Honourable Bukola Olopade, and the Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for their swift action in ensuring the payment of allowances and bonuses to Nigerian athletes participating at the Championships.
