The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has commissioned a series of landmark projects across the university’s campuses, aimed at enhancing student welfare, academic convenience, and staff wellbeing.

 

During her visit to the Agulu campus, the Acting Vice-Chancellor unveiled a new student hostel, addressing the long-standing accommodation challenges faced by students. The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Sunday Nduka, lauded the Vice-Chancellor’s proactive leadership and her commitment to improving students’ living conditions.

 

At the Mbawkwu campus, she commissioned several key facilities — a modern toilet complex, a functional borehole, and solar-powered streetlights — to boost comfort, hygiene, and security. The campus Director, Prof. Paul Okolie, described the initiative as “remarkable,” noting that the new infrastructure would greatly enhance campus life and safety.

 

In a major boost to healthcare delivery, the Acting Vice-Chancellor also inaugurated a dialysis machine at the UNIZIK Medical Centre, which will be used free of charge by students, while staff and external patients will enjoy subsidized rates of less than ₦13,000. This aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which pegs dialysis treatment at ₦15,000 in federal hospitals. The medical centre also received a new X-ray imaging machine, further strengthening its diagnostic capacity.

 

Reinforcing her administration’s focus on safety, the Vice-Chancellor inaugurated a CCTV Surveillance Unit at the Office of the Chief Security Officer (CSO), as part of her “UNIZIK Free and Safe” campus security initiative.

 

In a historic step towards staff empowerment, she performed the ground-breaking ceremony for the proposed UNIZIK Microfinance Bank Ltd, designed to improve the financial wellbeing and accessibility of loans for university staff.

 

Additionally, the Acting Vice-Chancellor commissioned buses for free staff transportation and distributed waste bins to all 17 faculties, including the administrative block, to promote environmental cleanliness and sustainable waste management across the university.

 

Reaffirming her administration’s dedication to infrastructure development and welfare-driven governance, the Acting Vice-Chancellor described the projects as a testament to UNIZIK’s vision of excellence, innovation, and community service.

 

“Our goal is to build a university environment that reflects dignity, safety, and academic excellence,” she stated. “These projects symbolize our collective commitment to progress and the wellbeing of everyone who calls UNIZIK home.”
