The Vice-Chancellor of Margaret Lawrence University, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, don explain why the school decide to ban smartphones for campus, say na to help students focus well for their studies.

 

Prof. Izevbigie talk this one on Monday for Abuja during the university third matriculation ceremony where about 272 new students take oath join the institution.

 

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the rule allow students to only use small basic phones wey fit make call and send text message, but smartphones and Android phones no go dey allowed inside campus because dem fit distract students from their academic work.

 

“The students no go fit use smartphones or Android phones for campus. Na only basic phones dem fit use to make calls and send text messages,” he talk.

 

He add say the policy na part of the school plan to build discipline and make sure students concentrate well for their books.

 

The VC warn say any student wey break the rule go face punishment, wey fit start from suspension and even stronger penalty if the person continue to disobey the rule.

 

Prof. Izevbigie also explain say the matriculation ceremony na the official way wey the 272 new students take enter the university system.

 

According to am, the number of female students pass the male students, with about 70 percent women and 30 percent men among the new intakes.

 

He talk say matriculation na the beginning of a student academic journey, while convocation na when the journey don finish.

 

“For us, matriculation very important because person must enter the university before e go later graduate,” he explain.

 

The university management also use the ceremony take commission their new international conference centre for the campus.

 

Earlier, the Pro-Chancellor and Founder of the university, Paul Odili, express happiness say the event go well and praise the effort to train students wey go become future leaders.

AY also talk say the high number of female students show say women now dey get more opportunities for education for Nigeria.

 

Former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, also advise the students make dem remain serious with their studies and maintain good character throughout their time for the university.

 

Rasheed warn dem make dem avoid bad behaviours from society and stay focused so that dem fit contribute positively to the development of the country.
