The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has commended the D’Tigress national women’s basketball team for making the nation proud, following their historic fifth consecutive victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

At a Presidential Reception held in their honour at the State House, President Tinubu — represented by Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima — announced a reward of $100,000 for each of the 12 players, and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew, led by coach Rena Wakama.

The Nigerian side clinched the continental title after defeating Mali with a final score of 78 to 64 at the Palais des Sports de Treichville, solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.

VP Shettima, standing in for the President, delivered a heartfelt tribute to the champions:

“You have conquered Africa, 78 to 64. It’s a declaration, not only of your tactical superiority but of your resilience and unity.”

He further praised the D’Tigress for fighting back from behind in the first quarter with “poise, not panic,” calling them “ambassadors of excellence” and “symbols of national unity.”

 

“My dear daughters, you wore the green and white not just as jerseys, but as a symbol of Nigeria’s promise. Now, you wear the crown — queens of African basketball — five times in a row.”

In her remarks, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu praised the players as “ambassadors of sports and of a great nation,” highlighting hard work and teamwork as the foundation of their success.

 

“This victory is not just about winning on the court, it’s about representing Nigeria with pride and integrity.”

 

She added that the win came at a time when Nigeria is already celebrating broader sporting excellence across various disciplines.

President Tinubu, through the Vice President, assured the team of continuous support as they prepare for the global stage, including potential participation in upcoming Olympic qualifiers and international tournaments.

 

“You go forth with the blessings and support of the entire nation. We stand by you — as one — united in pride.”

The D’Tigress have now cemented their place in African basketball history, and their victory has reignited national enthusiasm for women’s sports and basketball development in Nigeria.
