Victor Uzoho, a Nigerian football coach based in Finland, has thrown his weight behind the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)’s decision to appoint Eric Chelle as head coach of the Super Eagles. Uzoho expressed confidence in the team’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under Chelle’s leadership.

Chelle, a coach of African descent and former head coach of the Mali national team, was recently unveiled by the NFF to lead the three-time African champions. His appointment has triggered mixed reactions within the Nigerian football community, with some stakeholders skeptical about his capability to turn the Super Eagles’ fortunes around.

However, speaking during a virtual session hosted by the Ex-University of Ibadan Footballers Association, Uzoho described the NFF’s move as a “new chapter” for African football. Speaking from Helsinki, where he serves as Assistant Coach at FC POHU, Uzoho praised the federation for giving an African coach the opportunity to lead.

“The NFF is a body that understands what’s best. It’s a bold move, and I support it fully,” Uzoho said. “Football is about experimentation. If Chelle delivers results, we stand with him. If not, we adjust. But he deserves the chance.”

Uzoho’s remarks come at a time when doubts persist about Nigeria’s chances of securing a place at the 2026 World Cup, following recent struggles in the qualifiers. Critics often favor European or South American coaches, arguing they have superior technical knowledge. Uzoho, however, believes it’s time for African tacticians to be given a fair shot.

With over a decade of coaching experience in Finland and a track record of guiding teams to medal-winning finishes, Uzoho advocates for increased trust in African coaches who have demonstrated both competence and leadership.

“We can’t keep outsourcing our problems,” he said. “There are many African coaches who understand the game, the players, and the cultural dynamics. With the right support, they can succeed.”

He emphasized that Eric Chelle’s appointment is a strategic step that could reinvigorate the Super Eagles and guide them back to the world stage.

Uzoho concluded with a clear message: “Support the process, judge by the results, and embrace growth from within Africa.”
