Nigerian singer Joeboy has come out to the defense of his colleague Wizkid, following Wizkid's recent comments on Afrobeats. Joeboy believes that Wizkid's comments were taken out of context.

Wizkid had earlier sparked controversy online after he said that he no longer identifies as an Afrobeats artist. He explained that this is because he makes "all sorts of music."

In an interview on Cool FM Lagos, Joeboy said that Wizkid's comments were being misunderstood.  Joeboy insisted that Wizkid was not "running away from Afrobeats."

"Wizkid's statement is being misunderstood, he is not running away from Afrobeats," Joeboy said. "All we are saying is our identity is Afrobeats but please don't box us because we can make other genres of music too."
