The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed cautious optimism over the resolution of the lingering political crisis in Rivers State, describing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s latest intervention as a decisive and final effort to restore peace.

 

Wike made the remarks on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, noting that the president’s involvement marked the second major attempt to mediate the conflict between him and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

 

His comments were shared in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, in which Wike said he was hopeful that, with divine support, there would be no need for further presidential intervention.

 

According to the FCT minister, he had instructed members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to comply fully with President Tinubu’s directives and expressed confidence that they would do so. He also voiced hope that Governor Fubara would honour his commitments under the agreement reached.

 

“This marks the second occasion of the president stepping in, and I trust that, with God’s grace, this will be the final instance,” Wike said. “I have instructed the Assembly to adhere to the President’s wishes, and I am confident they will comply. I trust the governor will also do his part.”

 

The intervention followed a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, convened amid renewed impeachment moves against Governor Fubara by lawmakers aligned with Wike. The legislators had recently issued a notice accusing the governor of gross misconduct and constitutional violations, triggering fresh political tension in the state.

 

President Tinubu’s mediation reportedly included a symbolic gesture of reconciliation, as Wike and Governor Fubara were seen leaving the Presidential Villa together in the same vehicle after the meeting.

 

The peace effort is aimed at halting legislative actions that have disrupted governance in the oil-rich state for several months. Although the specific terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the intervention is widely viewed as a strategic move by the Presidency to stabilize Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

 

Attention now turns to whether both sides will uphold the agreement and bring lasting political stability to the state.
