Chief Dr. Chidi Anyaegbu (FCILC, MFR, CON), Chairman and CEO of Chisco Group, has declined the title of Mayor of Ndigbo, which was scheduled to be conferred on him on December 16, 2024, at Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

In a press release personally signed by him, Chief Anyaegbu expressed profound gratitude for the recognition and the confidence bestowed upon him. However, he cited the “politically charged nature of the position” as the primary reason for his decision to step back from the honor.

“I deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness and honor in selecting me for such a prestigious title,” Anyaegbu stated. “However, after careful consideration, I have decided to step back from this opportunity, given the politically sensitive context surrounding the title.”

The decision is seen as a move to avoid being drawn into political debates or controversies tied to the symbolic title, particularly at a time when tensions around ethnic and leadership identities remain high.

Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, a respected entrepreneur and leader, is widely regarded for his contributions to business, transportation, and community development in Nigeria. Through Chisco Group, he has been a prominent figure in promoting commerce and empowering people across the country.

While declining the title, Chief Anyaegbu reaffirmed his commitment to the advancement and unity of the Igbo community, promising to continue his role as a driver of economic growth and development.

The organizers of the event are yet to make a formal response regarding Chief Anyaegbu’s decision to reject the Mayor of Ndigbo title.
