The defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has yet to be followed by a formal reception months after he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), raising concerns within political circles.

 

Fubara officially announced his defection on December 9, 2025, a move that sparked excitement among supporters in Rivers State, many of whom viewed it as a break from the influence of his political benefactor, Nyesom Wike.

 

Shortly after his defection, the state APC chairman, Tony Okocha, presented him with a membership card under the directive of the party’s national chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda. However, the usual grand reception accorded to high-profile defectors has yet to take place.

 

Traditionally, governors who join the APC are formally received at large gatherings attended by top party figures, including the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and other senior stakeholders. In contrast, several governors who defected after Fubara—including Abba Kabir Yusuf, Ahmadu Fintiri, Caleb Muftwang, and Dauda Lawal—have already been formally welcomed.

 

Political observers note that such receptions go beyond celebration, serving as a public signal of acceptance and recognition within the party hierarchy. The absence of one for Fubara, they argue, may affect how he is perceived by party members in the state.

 

The delay has largely been attributed to ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, particularly the rift between Fubara and Wike. Although President Bola Tinubu had earlier intervened to ease tensions, both camps are reportedly proceeding with caution.

 

Sources indicate that Fubara’s defection may have occurred without prior alignment with Wike, leading to a struggle over control of party structures in the state. This has made it difficult to organise a reception without risking further division.

 

Party insiders also fear that hosting such an event could be interpreted as a sign that Fubara has fully taken control of the APC in Rivers, especially if key figures are absent. Concerns have also been raised about the tone of speeches that might be delivered, which could inflame existing disagreements.
