President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day address, acknowledged the significant struggles many Nigerians face amid rising living costs and unemployment. Speaking to the nation, the President reassured citizens that his administration is fully aware of their challenges and is working tirelessly to bring relief.

"Fellow Nigerians, as I address you today, I am deeply aware of the struggles many of you face in these challenging times," Tinubu stated. "Our administration knows that many of you struggle with rising living costs and the search for meaningful employment. I want to assure you that your voices are heard."

Highlighting his administration’s efforts to revive the economy, Tinubu emphasized the importance of patience as reforms are beginning to bear fruit. "We are committed to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate the suffering of our citizens. Once again, I plead for your patience as the reforms we are implementing show positive signs, and we are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel."

Reflecting on Nigeria's journey since gaining independence 64 years ago, the President hailed the country's resilience and progress. He celebrated the nation's achievements, from its intellectual contributions to advancements in technology, infrastructure, and the arts. However, he acknowledged that the aspirations of the founding fathers remain a work in progress.

"While it is tempting to focus on what has been left undone and where we have stumbled as a nation, we must never lose sight of how far we have come in forging and holding our country together," Tinubu remarked. He also underscored Nigeria’s survival through various crises, including the civil war, and how the country has managed its diversity to build a stronger nation.

On security, Tinubu pointed out significant victories, stating that his administration has made notable strides in the fight against terrorism and banditry. "Within one year, our government has eliminated Boko Haram and bandit commanders faster than ever," he said, reporting that over 300 commanders had been neutralized. The President expressed optimism that as peace is restored to communities, food production will increase, leading to reduced food prices.

In addressing natural disasters, Tinubu mentioned that the federal government had approved a Disaster Relief Fund to respond swiftly to emergencies, particularly recent flooding. He also assured the public that integrity tests on all dams in the country had been ordered to prevent future disasters.

Looking toward the future, the President reiterated his administration's resolve to reform the economy. "The economy is undergoing the necessary reforms and retooling to serve us better and more sustainably," he said, cautioning that failure to address fiscal misalignments could lead to dire consequences.

In a significant highlight, Tinubu announced that Nigeria attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investment over the past year, a testament to the positive effects of his economic reforms.

As Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence, the President called on citizens to reflect on their nation’s progress and unite in their commitment to a better future. "While we celebrate the progress we have made, we must also recognise some of our missed opportunities and mistakes. Our mistakes must not be allowed to follow us into the future," he concluded.
