The Walking Football Association of Nigeria, popularly known as Waka Football, has rounded off its 2025 activities with an exciting exhibition match between Team Dafaan and Team Adeh.

 

The entertaining encounter ended in a 3–3 draw, as Team Adeh, led by former member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Lumumba Adeh, held the equally strong Team Dafaan, captained by Honourable John Dafaan, in a thrilling contest that thrilled spectators.

 

Honourable Lumumba Adeh, who is also a former board member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Proprietor of JC Raiders Football Club, expressed his appreciation to the leadership of Waka Football for inviting him to be part of the association. He highlighted the benefits he has gained since joining the initiative.

 

“I must confess that since I came into Waka Football, I have benefitted immensely in terms of fitness, wellness and social interaction,” he said.

 

In his remarks, Honourable John Dafaan also expressed his delight at discovering Walking Football, noting that the game has contributed significantly to his physical well-being and overall health.

 

Walking Football is a modified version of the game designed for older adults aged 50 years and above. It is further categorized into age brackets such as 50+, 60+ and 70+, while some European countries even feature an 80+ category. The game is played as a six-a-side match and emphasizes walking rather than running. Women from the age of 40 years are also eligible to participate.

 

The initiative provides an avenue for former footballers and enthusiasts to remain active in the sport while promoting health, fitness and social engagement. Walking Football was introduced to Nigeria by Elder Uti, who currently serves as the National Chairman of the Walking Football Association of Nigeria.

 

Prominent members of Waka Football in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) include three former Presidents of the All Stars Football Club Abuja—Kashim Bayero, Austel Elumelu and Abdulrazak Dokunmu. Others are Taofeek Odetunde, Okosun Bishop Ambrose, Chuks Ijeomah and Godwin Bamigboye, a former Chairman of the FCT Football Coaches Association and former member of the FCT Football Association.

 

The FCT chapter of Waka Football is currently working closely with the national body in Lagos to prepare and present a Nigerian team for the Walking Football Cup of Nations scheduled for 2026.
