Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has showered praise on the Super Falcons of Nigeria following their dramatic 2-1 victory over arch-rivals South Africa in the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Tuesday evening.

Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State and ex-player for Bendel Insurance FC, described the clash as a “final before the final,” and lauded Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie for stepping up in crucial moments to deliver victory for Nigeria.

“Rasheedat and Michelle delivered when it mattered most,” Shaibu said, adding that the win not only avenged Nigeria’s painful 2022 loss to Banyana Banyana but also reaffirmed the Super Falcons’ dominance on the continent.

Ajibade opened the scoring late in the first half with a coolly converted penalty after a South African handball in the box. The defending champions fought back, equalizing through Linda Motlhalo’s penalty after Hildah Magaia was fouled in the box by Osinachi Ohale.

Just as the game looked destined for extra time, Michelle Alozie stunned the crowd with a thunderous long-range strike deep into stoppage time, sealing the Falcons’ place in the final and keeping alive hopes of a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

Shaibu expressed excitement about the team’s performance but urged the players and coaching crew to maintain focus as they prepare to face host nation Morocco in the final.

“We were lucky to get that second goal,” he noted. “But against Morocco, we must be sharper and apply more pressure. We need to improve on our performance against South Africa, especially knowing we’re facing the hosts who will have the crowd behind them.”

The NIS boss also confirmed his intention to travel to Morocco to support the Super Falcons in person and encouraged Nigerians to rally behind the team.

“Our girls have shown grit and determination. Now, all that’s left is to bring that trophy home. Nigerians are waiting,” he said.

Nigeria will now prepare for a blockbuster final clash against Morocco, with national pride and a historic 10th title on the line.
