Esther Okoronkwo was named Woman of the Match after delivering a game-changing performance in Nigeria’s 3-0 triumph over Tunisia in their opening Group B fixture at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday night.

 

Coming off the bench in the second half for goal-scorer Rinsola Babajide, Okoronkwo injected a fresh wave of energy into the Super Falcons’ attack. The 28-year-old forward dazzled at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium with her sharp movement, intelligent link-up play, and a near-goal that rattled the crossbar in the 68th minute.

 

Her dynamic presence and creativity helped unlock Tunisia’s defense late in the game, and it was her clever knockdown from Ashleigh Plumptre’s cross that set up fellow substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo for Nigeria’s third goal in the 84th minute.

 

Though she didn’t score, Okoronkwo’s influence was unmistakable and earned widespread praise from fans, pundits, and her teammates. Sunday’s match marked her 15th cap for Nigeria. She remains on six international goals, but her all-around contribution once again highlighted her growing importance to the team.

 

“Esther gave us exactly what we needed in the second half — composure, creativity, and that final spark in the attacking third,” said head coach Justine Madugu after the match.

 

With Nigeria now sitting atop Group B, the Super Falcons will turn their attention to Botswana, whom they face on Thursday, July 9. Okoronkwo’s standout performance suggests she could feature more prominently as the team pushes toward a record-extending 10th continental title.
