Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has urged caution despite Nigeria’s commanding start to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, warning that the competition features several quality teams and that the journey to a record-extending 10th title is far from over.

 

The reigning Nigerian champions opened their campaign in style with a 3-0 victory over Tunisia on Sunday. Star striker Asisat Oshoala, along with Rinsola Babajide and Chinwendu Ihezuo, found the back of the net to secure three points and top spot in Group B on goal difference.

 

Though largely untested in the game, Nnadozie emphasized the importance of staying grounded and focused as the tournament progresses.

 

“It was a good beginning for us, and we hope to continue that way,” Nnadozie told Channels TV in Casablanca. “There are so many good teams at this WAFCON. We just have to take it one game at a time. We don’t need to push too much. We focus on our next game, and if we continue like this, Mission X will be valid.”

 

The “Mission X” campaign refers to the team’s quest for a 10th WAFCON title, a record unmatched on the continent. Since the tournament became a full-scale competition in 1998, Nigeria has lifted the trophy nine times and has never failed to reach the semi-final stage.

 

After finishing fourth in 2022 — their lowest finish in recent memory — the Falcons are determined to reclaim their dominance. Their next test comes against Botswana on Thursday, a game that could all but seal a semi-final spot with another win.

 

Coach Randy Waldrum’s squad features a strong mix of experienced players and rising stars, and their performance in the opening match has been widely praised. However, as Nnadozie pointed out, consistency and humility will be key in their quest to be crowned African champions once again.

 

Nigeria’s final group game will be against Cape Verde next week, as they look to wrap up Group B with a perfect record.
