Violence has broken out in Eastern Cape following protests against the installation of a Nigerian traditional leader, with demonstrators in East London setting vehicles ablaze and attacking properties linked to foreign nationals.

 

The unrest was triggered by the coronation of Solomon Ogbonna Ezike as “Eze Ndigbo,” a title representing the Igbo community in the diaspora. While the role is intended to provide leadership and coordination for Nigerians abroad, the move has drawn criticism from some local groups in South Africa.

 

Opponents argue that recognising a foreign traditional ruler within South Africa raises concerns about sovereignty and undermines existing local leadership structures. Protest organisers had initially described the march as a peaceful demonstration against what they termed the “installation of a foreign king.”

 

However, the situation escalated when some protesters turned violent, targeting vehicles and buildings believed to be owned by foreign nationals. Emergency services responded to multiple fires involving trucks, vans, and other vehicles, while police deployed crowd-control measures, including stun grenades, in an effort to restore order.

 

Authorities have yet to confirm the extent of damage or report any arrests, but investigations are ongoing. Officials are also expected to examine the circumstances surrounding both the protest and the installation ceremony.

 

The incident has once again highlighted persistent tensions over immigration and xenophobia in South Africa, where foreign nationals—including Nigerians, Zimbabweans, and Somalis—have previously been targeted during periods of economic strain and social unrest.

 

As security agencies work to stabilise the situation, tensions remain high in affected communities, with calls for dialogue and calm to prevent further escalation.
