The new Department of Software Engineering will award Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree to her graduands as against the perceived Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) and will be domiciled under the Faculty of Physical Sciences.

These were the revelations of the Head, Department of Information Technology, UNIZIK, Dr. Ikechukwu Innocent Umeh during a chat with reporters while responding to questions regarding the unbundling of the Computer Science Academic programme of the institution.

Dr. Umeh informed that Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka just like most institutions in the country with Computer Science Academic programme has now produced three more Departments such as Information Technology, Cyber Security and Software Engineering.

The ICT expert, described Software Engineering as the branch of computer science that deals with the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. He explained that career opportunities in software engineering are driven by new technologies in automobiles, aviation, telecommunications, robotics, defense and security.

Umeh also disclosed that UNIZIK before now had academic staff and experts from the mother department of computer science who majored in various areas such as Information Technology and Software Engineering during the pursuit of their doctorate and masters degree programmes.

The scholar informed that the course which has a gestation period of four years of study will in the near future produce graduates who will add value to the society as competent and professional self-reliant individuals and not just mere school leavers who will roam about seeking for white collar jobs after their stay in school.
