Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu finally broke her goal drought on Sunday morning, finding the back of the net for the first time this season in Racing Louisville’s 4–2 defeat to Kansas City Current in the NWSL.

 

The Nigerian international, who has 31 caps for her country, came off the bench in the 87th minute and made an instant impact. Within a minute of her introduction, Kanu rose highest to power home a header, scoring Louisville’s second goal in the 88th minute. It was a much-needed personal breakthrough for the 27-year-old, whose playing time and form have been inconsistent since joining the American side in 2023.

 

However, her goal was not enough to complete the comeback, as Kansas City had already built a commanding lead in a match that featured six goals and high drama from start to finish.

 

The game started on a sour note for Louisville when Lauren Milliet turned the ball into her own net just two minutes in, giving Kansas City an early lead. The hosts extended their dominance with quick goals from Michelle Cooper in the 15th minute and Brazilian forward Beatriz in the 19th, going into halftime 3–0 up.

 

Racing Louisville fought back in the second half. Janine Sonis pulled one back, and when Kanu scored to make it 3–2, there was a flicker of hope. But Kansas City sealed the win deep into stoppage time when Temwa Chawinga finished off a counterattack in the 95th minute to make it 4–2.

 

Kanu’s goal was her seventh in 37 appearances for Racing Louisville and a reminder of her attacking instincts. After scoring just once in 21 games during her debut season and five goals in 12 appearances last year, Kanu has struggled for form and regular minutes in 2025. Sunday’s goal might help reignite her season and push for more playing time.

 

Despite the loss, the Nigerian star’s performance was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult outing for Racing Louisville.
