Former Super Falcons striker Ini Umotong was honoured as a trailblazer and role model at this year’s Birmingham Youth Sports Academy (BYSA) Annual Player Awards, held at the conferencing suites of Birmingham City Football Club.

 

The ceremony, which celebrates outstanding grassroots football achievements, recognized Umotong for her exceptional contributions to the development of women’s football and her inspirational journey from Birmingham’s youth pitches to the global stage.

 

At just 31 years old, Umotong has carved out a legacy that continues to motivate a generation of young athletes, especially girls from underrepresented backgrounds. Born in Calabar, Nigeria, she moved to Birmingham at a young age and began playing football at just five years old. Her passion and talent quickly stood out, earning her a place at Birmingham City FC in her early career.

 

Umotong went on to represent top clubs including Portsmouth United, Oxford United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Växjö DFF in Sweden, before finishing her professional playing career with Lewes FC Women. She also donned the green and white jersey of Nigeria, proudly representing the Super Falcons on the international stage.

 

In a heartfelt tribute, BYSA Chairman Professor Paul Cadman praised Umotong as a “living inspiration” whose trailblazing efforts have paved the way for many young women in football. “Her story is one of resilience, excellence, and dedication,” he said, as he presented her with a special recognition award to thunderous applause.

 

The star-studded evening brought together over 180 guests, including Birmingham City CEO Jeremy Dale, Lord Mayor of Birmingham Ken Wood, and a host of grassroots football champions, community leaders, and sponsors. Among them were Safaraz Ali of the Pathway Group, Imdad Hussain of IQ Coaches, and Professor Gino Martini, CEO of PHTA (Precision Health Technologies Accelerator).

 

Umotong’s recognition underscores the growing appreciation for women’s football and the importance of empowering young girls through sport. Her journey—from a five-year-old football enthusiast in Birmingham to a Super Falcons international—continues to serve as a beacon of hope for the next generation.
