President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima are expected to spend a combined N9,364,349,417 on local and foreign travels, as well as food and refreshments, in the 2026 fiscal year, according to details of the 2026 Appropriation Bill released on Thursday by the Budget Office of the Federation.

 

President Tinubu had on December 19, 2025, presented the proposed N58.18 trillion budget to a joint session of the National Assembly, stressing that national security remains the foundation for economic growth, investment and social stability.

 

A breakdown of the 2,790-page budget document shows that the President earmarked N3.2 trillion for Defence, N1.1 trillion for Power, and N2.3 trillion for the Education sector. The Federal Government also plans to spend N2.1 trillion on Health and Social Welfare, while Agriculture and Food Security is allocated N1.4 trillion. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to receive N1 trillion.

 

According to the budget proposal, President Tinubu will spend a total of N7,014,596,511 on local and international travels in 2026. Of this amount, N873,886,689 is earmarked for local travels, while N6,140,709,822 is allocated for foreign trips. In addition, N431,620,183 has been budgeted for foodstuffs, catering materials, supplies, refreshments and meals.

 

Vice President Shettima is expected to spend N1,732,106,437 on local and foreign travels, with N417,488,198 allocated for local trips and N1,314,618,239 for international travels. The budget also provides N186,026,286 for his foodstuffs, catering materials, supplies, refreshments and meals.

 

Further details show that the President is expected to spend N65.77 million on honorarium and sitting allowances, while N895 million has been budgeted for the purchase of library books and equipment. The Presidency also plans to procure vehicles worth N179 million, office furniture and fittings valued at N778.6 million, and health and medical equipment estimated at N1.342 million.

 

Additionally, a total of N89.504 million has been earmarked for the ongoing procurement of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) for both the President and the Vice President.

 

Meanwhile, the Senate, on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, passed the 2026 Appropriation Bill for second reading, paving the way for detailed legislative scrutiny of the proposed spending plan.
