President Bola Tinubu praised former military president, retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, for his courage and patriotism in admitting that late M.K.O. Abiola won the June 12, 1993, election. Tinubu spoke at the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, “A Journey in Service,” and the fundraising for the IBB Presidential Library Project in Abuja on Thursday.

 

Babangida publicly confirmed for the first time in 32 years that Abiola had indeed won the historic election, which was later annulled, leading to a political crisis and his eventual exit from power. Tinubu noted that Babangida’s admission would help set historical records straight.

 

“I am glad about the revelation of my general… Let me say thank you for everything, for who you are, what you are, and how you have contributed to the history of this great country,” Tinubu remarked.

 

He also expressed his commitment to taking tough decisions to reposition Nigeria’s economy. Tinubu acknowledged the presence of notable leaders, including former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and ex-Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, appreciating their contributions to African unity and sovereignty.

 

Babangida, reflecting on his tenure, admitted that annulling the June 12 election was his most challenging decision and expressed regret over how it was handled. “Undoubtedly, credible, free, and fair elections were held on June 12, 1993… I accept full responsibility for all decisions taken under my watch,” he stated.

 

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who reviewed the book, confirmed that Babangida acknowledged in his memoir that Abiola secured the majority vote and a broad electoral spread, fulfilling constitutional requirements for victory.
