pular singer Ric Hassani has weighed in on the growing trend of gospel artists transitioning into secular music, asserting that the shift is often rooted in personal calling and fulfillment rather than financial gain.

Speaking in a recent interview with Hip TV, Hassani reflected on his own journey, revealing that he started his musical career in the church but later realized that gospel music wasn’t his true calling.

“Gospel is beyond just singing,” he said. “You have to be blessed to interpret God’s word through music. For example, there’s no way a Katy Perry could minister the way CeCe Winans does. CeCe is gifted in a special way. Whitney Houston was blessed differently.”

Hassani emphasized that not every artist is meant to serve within the church, even if they maintain strong Christian beliefs. “Some of us were made for the world. I’m a strong Christian. Every album I’ve released has at least one gospel song. But that’s not my main calling. I’m meant to impact the world with a different kind of music.”

He also dismissed the idea that financial motivation is the primary reason gospel artists go secular, saying true artistic satisfaction goes beyond monetary reward.

“People think it’s about money, but it’s not. Yes, creatives like money—everyone does—but the real fulfillment comes from doing what you’re truly called to do. Even artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido—if it was all about money, Davido wouldn’t even need to be doing music. He already has wealth. It’s about the satisfaction of creating and existing in your purpose.”

According to Hassani, the decision to switch genres is deeply personal and often necessary for artists to thrive creatively and authentically.
