Kwara State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to use the instrumentality of sports to engage the youth and reduce restiveness in the state.
The SWAN made the call in a statement issued by its Assistant Secretary, Abdulrosheed Okiki in Ilorin following his inauguration as the seventh executive governor of Kwara State.
It encouraged Governor Abdulrazaq to exploit private sector background to create enabling environment for massive private sector participation in sports to attract sponsorships for all sporting events in the state.
It harped on the need to improve the welfare of players and athletes in order to retain them during important national competitions.
The Association also urged the Governor to establish Sports centre in each of three senatorial districts and institutionalise sports development programmes in all schools across the state with a view to identifying talents at grassroot level, right from the infancy.
SWAN is elated that the Governor had shown in his private capacity as Sportsman and lover of sports with his participation, sponsorship and support to clubs and sporting events in different parts of the country.
“We’re aware of your contributions to our darling Kwara United FC in the past, Kaduna Polo, Lagos Polo Club, among others,” the statement reads.
The Association recalled that the Governor was one of the players who represented Kwara State in football event at the 1973 National Sports Festival.
SWAN appealed to Governor Abdulrazaq to revovate the Indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Stadium to meet International Olympic Committee standard in order to attract local and international competitions.
