In a significant boost for women’s football in Nigeria, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and the Ratels Sports Development Foundation (RSDF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to sponsor and present Player of the Match awards during the 2025 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six.

The MoU, formalized in Abuja, marks a strategic partnership aimed at recognizing and rewarding individual brilliance throughout the tournament, which is set to take place in Ikenne, Ogun State.

According to SWAN Secretary-General Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, RSDF will sponsor all Player of the Match awards, each comprising a branded trophy or plaque, a certificate of recognition, and a potential cash incentive. The initiative reflects RSDF’s ongoing commitment to supporting grassroots and women’s sports development in Nigeria.

RSDF President, Chief Dr. Paul Edeh, noted that the Foundation will ensure prominent brand visibility across all award materials and will collaborate with SWAN to handle the logistics for each award presentation.

SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, praised the partnership as “a timely boost for women’s football and a powerful statement of support for athletes striving for excellence.” He emphasized the role of both the media and development-focused organizations in advancing the women’s game across the country.

As part of the agreement, SWAN will coordinate a panel of independent sports journalists to select award recipients and will lead the post-match presentation ceremonies in conjunction with NWFL officials. The association will also highlight RSDF’s sponsorship across its media platforms and tournament coverage.

The MoU will remain in effect for the duration of the 2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six and underscores a shared commitment by both parties to amplify visibility, reward talent, and strengthen the foundations of women’s football in Nigeria.
