The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has extended its congratulations to Mr. Bukola Olopade on his appointment as the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

In a letter addressed to Mr. Olopade on November 15, 2024, SWAN President, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, through the Association’s Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, described the appointment as a perfect match, praising Olopade’s extensive expertise and contributions to Nigerian sports.

Mr. Benjamin expressed confidence that Olopade’s leadership would drive the sports sector to unprecedented success. He also noted the promising synergy between the newly appointed NSC DG and the Commission’s Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, predicting transformative progress for Nigerian sports.

The letter stated:
“Your appointment is a clear testament to your unwavering commitment to sports development in Nigeria. As sports media professionals, we are confident in your ability to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s sporting framework. You have our full support as always.

“As a trusted ally of the media, we believe our collaboration will continue to grow stronger as you implement progressive and sustainable grassroots development strategies for Nigerian sports. Additionally, we remain committed to our watchdog role, providing insights and recommendations to help revitalize the sporting sector.”

In a related development, SWAN commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for securing early qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a statement issued Friday, SWAN highlighted the team’s determination and coordination, attributing their success to a well-executed plan involving the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the technical crew, and the players.

“SWAN applauds the Super Eagles for their seamless qualification for the 2025 AFCON. This achievement underscores the team’s quality and the organizational efficiency of the NFF,” Mr. Benjamin remarked.

He urged the NFF and other stakeholders to prioritize early and thorough preparations for the tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco. Reflecting on Nigeria’s AFCON history—three-time winners and runners-up in the 2023 edition—he emphasized the importance of aiming for a fourth title.

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is slated to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco.
