The National leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has constituted a three-man Caretaker Committee to oversee the affairs of its Abia State Chapter for an initial period of three months.

 

The appointments were confirmed in an official letter signed by the National Secretary-General of SWAN, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, titled “Caretaker Committee For SWAN Abia State Chapter.”

 

The newly appointed committee members are:

• Kingsley Chijioke Okwum – Chairman

• Bethel Zephaniah Kalu – Secretary

• Chigozie Nwosu – Member

 

According to the letter, the decision follows the expiration of a grace period earlier granted by the national secretariat to state chapters that were yet to conduct elections. The move is part of efforts to ensure continuity and order in line with SWAN’s governing statutes.

 

“Following the expiration of the grace period given by the National Secretariat of SWAN for State chapters that were yet to conduct elections, SWAN National Leadership is compelled to take steps in line with extant laws to protect the Association in such chapters,” the letter stated.

 

It further explained that after a careful evaluation of events in the Abia Chapter, the National Secretariat, in compliance with relevant provisions of the SWAN Constitution, resolved to set up the caretaker team to pilot the chapter’s affairs and conduct fresh elections within three months.

 

The letter also directed the outgoing executive committee, led by Mr. Vincent Obike, to immediately hand over all association property in its custody to the newly appointed Caretaker Committee.

 

“As Chairman and Members of the Committee, we expect that you will bring your wealth of experience to bear in the discharge of your service to the Association and humanity,” the letter added.

 

The appointment took effect from Thursday, September 11, 2025.

 

With this development, the national leadership of SWAN has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism, accountability, and democratic principles within its structures across the federation.
