Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a dominant performance on Sunday evening, defeating fierce rivals Ghana 3-1 in their final preparatory game ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

 

Goals from Chiwendu Ihezuo, Asisat Oshoala, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade sealed the emphatic win for the nine-time African champions, who look poised for another title run at the continental tournament.

 

The Falcons asserted their authority from the opening whistle, dominating possession and pushing Ghana onto the back foot with wave after wave of attack. Their pressure finally paid off in the 34th minute when Ihezuo pounced on a defensive lapse to fire home the opening goal.

 

Just before halftime, returning star Asisat Oshoala—former Liverpool and Arsenal forward and the first African to score in the Women’s Super League—made it 2-0 with a composed penalty after Ajibade was brought down in the box.

 

Five minutes into the second half, the Falcons extended their lead further. Ajibade, leading by example, finished off a slick team move to put the result beyond doubt.

 

Although Ghana managed a late consolation goal through Alice Kusi in the 88th minute, it did little to dent Nigeria’s control or confidence.

 

Head coach Justin Madugu hailed the performance as a significant boost ahead of the WAFCON tournament. With depth, discipline, and attacking flair on full display, Nigeria’s quest for a record-extending tenth African title looks well on track.
