Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged religious leaders to emphasize prayer and guidance for governments rather than casting curses upon them.

She made this call during the opening ceremony of the International Conference of the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI), a four-day event in Abuja, themed “Value-Based Leadership Model for Africa.” The conference has drawn leaders from Africa, Europe, and global Christian communities to discuss pressing leadership issues on the continent.

Represented by Princess Gloria Akobundu, National Coordinator and CEO of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, Tinubu highlighted the significant challenges facing leadership in Africa today. She encouraged spiritual leaders to promote peace and to follow Christ’s example by praying fervently for those in power, rather than condemning them.

Tinubu stated, “I urge our spiritual fathers to foster peace and development by praying for the government. Instead of cursing or insulting, let us speak the truth to our leaders and our citizens’ conscience. We must not presume to take God’s place, as He can use anyone to fulfill His purpose on Earth. Africa stands at a crossroads, confronting numerous challenges that demand effective leadership.”

She emphasized the need for Christian leaders to adopt a value-based leadership model reflecting the teachings of Jesus Christ, grounded in justice, integrity, wisdom, and social harmony.

Earlier, Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, underscored the importance of effective leadership. He prayed for the emergence of conscientious and compassionate leaders across Africa.

Okoh remarked, “Leadership is not just a position; it’s a calling to serve with integrity and purpose. Scripture reminds us that our thoughts and actions should align with higher principles. In a diverse and potential-rich continent, we have a unique opportunity to lead by example and uphold the moral standards our faith demands.”

He added, “In these challenging times, we need leaders who embody biblical values more than ever. We face economic uncertainties, insecurity, social injustices, and conflicts that threaten our unity and progress. Our leadership must be rooted in love and unity as we strive to uplift our communities and nations, committed to the principles that are noble and pure.”
