Gift Monday Leaves UD Tenerife for NWSL’s Washington Spirit

Spanish media had reported her departure last weekend ahead of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) deadline day in the United States on Monday.

Gift Nyakno Monday is leaving Spain after securing a transfer agreement before the end of the 2024/25 season.

After nearly three seasons with UD Tenerife, the Nigerian forward departs as the club’s top scorer for the current season, with ten goals in the regular season. She has been a key attacking figure and a fan favorite during her time with the Blue and Whites.

Since arriving from Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) side FC Robo Queens in 2022, Monday has made over 70 appearances, scoring 22 goals for Costa Adeje Tenerife Egatesa. Her standout 2024/25 campaign includes 12 goals and three assists in 19 Liga F matches, along with two Copa de la Reina appearances. She was also named the league’s best player in February.

UD Tenerife president Sergio Batista praised Monday’s contributions, stating, “She has become one of the family, always willing to help and give her all. She has earned the affection of everyone, both personally and professionally. The doors of our club remain open to her.”

Monday is expected to be unveiled by NWSL club Washington Spirit this week, joining a growing list of Nigerian stars in the league, including Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, Uchenna Kanu, Emmanuel Favour, and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
