Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has apologised following backlash over his recent comments about the state of security in the country.

 

The controversy began after the comedian stated during a podcast appearance that Nigeria is safer now than it was ten years ago under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. His remarks, which praised the current government’s handling of insecurity, sparked outrage among many Nigerians who described the comments as insensitive, particularly to victims of kidnappings and violent attacks.

 

Amid mounting criticism, Seyi Law issued a public apology, expressing regret over the statement.

 

“I am deeply sorry for such an insensitive statement. I apologise to victims, families, and everyone who has been affected in any way by the insecurity in the country,” he said. “You don’t deserve to have your sleep snatched away from you, and the pain of one should be the pain of all.”

 

While reaffirming his support for President Tinubu, the comedian also called on the government to intensify efforts in addressing insecurity across the nation.

 

“As a supporter of President Tinubu, I want to also use this opportunity to call on him to intensify efforts in the battle against insecurity,” he added.

 

The apology has generated mixed reactions online, with some accepting his remorse, while others continue to criticise his initial remarks as being out of touch with the realities faced by many Nigerians.

 

Security remains a sensitive and pressing issue in the country, with citizens frequently demanding stronger measures to curb kidnapping, banditry and other violent crimes.
