Rivers United has penned an emotional condolence message to the family of their former goalkeeper Coach, Okey Iweanya, who died on Friday, 9 January, 2025, Exclusivenews.com.ng reports.

Iweanya, who is popularly known as 'Size One', was a former goalkeeper of Dolphins FC, which metamorphosed into Rivers United in 2015.

In the message signed by Charles Mayuku, Spokesman of the club, quoted the club's General Manager, Chief Dr Okey Kpalukwu as describing Iweanya's passing as 'shocking'.

"The management, technical crew, players, staff, and supporters of Rivers United FC are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of our former goalkeeper coach, Okechukwu "Size One" Iwenya, who departed on Friday, January 9, in Port Harcourt", the condolence message began.

General Manager of the club, who also doubles as a Board Member of the Nigeria Premier Football League and Chairman NPFL Club Owners Association, Chief Dr Okey Kpalukwu, in a release, expressed shock at the news of his demise.

"On behalf of the club, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Iwenya family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. Size One, as he was affectionately known, was an integral part of our coaching crew that led Rivers United FC to winning the Nigeria Premier Football League title in 2022.

"A talented goalkeeper in his playing days, Size One had donned the jerseys of Eagle Cement FC and Sunshine Stars, showcasing his skills and passion for the beautiful game. 

"His experience and expertise as a goalkeeper coach were invaluable to our team, and his contributions will forever be etched in our memories.

"We pray that his soul finds eternal rest, and may his legacy inspire future generations of footballers and coaches.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Iwenya family and the football family in Nigeria during this period of mourning".
