Former Senator in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has described the protest in Minna, Niger State, against the high costs of living as a call for immediate and impactful measures to address the problems of  poverty in the country.

The social activist made this known  in a statement on his X platform, noting that the protest falls within the ambit of the right to peaceful dissent.

He added that protest against the cost of living was also done in other European cities experiencing economic pains.

"The protest in Minna, Niger State against the high cost of living falls within the ambit of the right to peaceful dissent. Protest against the cost of living was also done in other European cities experiencing economic pains.

"The protest is simply a message and a call for immediate and impactful measures to address the problems of the epidemic of poverty in the country," he wrote.

It would be recalled that  hundreds of men, women and youths in Minna, the Niger State capital on Monday, staged a protest against the rising inflation in the country.

They lamented the hikes in the prices of gas and fuel in the country.

Videos posted had showed how the protesters blocked major roads as they lamented that there was no government effort to arrest the situation of the rising cost of food items.

The protesters were heard chanting protest songs, while security agents including policemen looked on.

However, Yakubu Garba, Deputy Governor of Niger State, had said the government was aware of the pain and hardship facing families in the country.

Yakubu had told the protesters that the government was working towards reducing the cost of living and the economic implications of the petrol subsidy removal.
