The long-standing political crisis in Rivers State has reached a climax as President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency, suspending the governor, his deputy, and the state’s legislature.

 

The declaration follows a Supreme Court ruling on February 28, which condemned Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s actions, including his alleged dismantling of the legislative arm. The court held that “there is no government in Rivers State” due to the absence of a functioning legislature.

 

Security concerns also contributed to the decision, with militants reportedly vandalizing oil pipelines in the state. The President accused the governor of failing to act against these threats and ordered security agencies to restore order.

 

The suspension of elected officials paves the way for a temporary federal administration, led by retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas. While the administrator is barred from making new laws, he is empowered to formulate necessary regulations, subject to federal approval.
