Ashleigh Plumptre has expressed disappointment over the postponement of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) scheduled for 2026.

 

The Super Falcons defender, who plays for Al-Ittihad Ladies FC, made the remarks during a video interview shared by Match of the Day on BBC following confirmation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that the tournament had been rescheduled.

 

The continental competition was initially set to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026, in Morocco but has now been moved to July 25 to August 16, 2026.

 

Reacting to the development, Plumptre said such scheduling changes are unlikely to occur in other major football tournaments, especially in the men’s game.

 

“It just wouldn’t happen for other tournaments in women’s football, and especially in men’s football. Last WAFCON wasn’t less important than this one just because it wasn’t qualification for a World Cup,” she said.

 

The former Leicester City Women FC defender also emphasized the significance of the upcoming edition of the tournament, which will feature an expanded format.

 

According to Plumptre, the 2026 competition will be the first to include 16 teams, a development she believes raises the stakes for participating nations.

 

“This is the first time it’s the edition where there are 16 teams, all of which are going to want to be able to go and qualify for the World Cup. And this is a big deal for many teams,” she added.

 

She further noted that the tournament will provide valuable opportunities for several nations making their debut appearance on the continental stage.

 

“Many of them haven’t even been in the AFCON before, never mind had the chance to qualify for a World Cup. It also helps them financially as well,” Plumptre said.

 

The defender’s comments highlight growing concern among players and stakeholders about the scheduling of Africa’s premier women’s football competition, as preparations continue for the rescheduled tournament.
