The final of the first-ever Northern Amateur Women Football Association League lived up to expectations, as Plateau United Queens edged Joe Kay Angels 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw in regulation time.

 

Joe Kay Angels took an early lead through Mary James, who finished off a brilliant assist from Beatrice Oko. It looked like Joe Kay Angels were on course to lift the trophy, maintaining their slim advantage deep into the second half. However, Plateau United Queens, who like Joe Kay Angels had not conceded a goal throughout the tournament, found a lifeline late on.

 

Nanyi Ndam equalized from the penalty spot in the dying minutes, forcing the final into a penalty shootout. In the end, Plateau United Queens held their nerve to triumph 4-3 on penalties and claim the historic title.

 

Following the match, Joe Kay Angels owner, Joshua Dabo, praised the tournament organizers for their efforts in promoting women’s football but expressed disappointment that his team could not hold onto their lead.

 

On his part, the Assistant General Manager of Plateau United FC, Danjuma Isandu, hailed the initiative as a “great step forward” for women’s football in Northern Nigeria. He noted the need for increased financial support but remained optimistic that, with consistent effort, women’s football in Nigeria would grow into one of the country’s most popular and lucrative sports.

• Jaba Queens (Kaduna)

• Afunkoyo Babes (Taraba)

• Bwaruaune Babes (Adamawa)

• Blessed KAA Queens (Jos)

• Jewel Queens (Gombe)

• Jazzy Stars Damsels (Jos)

• Zango Queens (Kaduna)

 

The tournament marks an important milestone in developing grassroots women’s football in the northern region of Nigeria.
