Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Melvin Pinnick has expressed gratitude and humility after narrowly missing out on re-election to the prestigious FIFA Council. Despite the setback, Pinnick remained upbeat, reflecting on his journey in football administration with a deep sense of fulfillment.

 

Speaking at the Marriott Mena House in Cairo on Wednesday, Pinnick acknowledged the fierce nature of football politics but emphasized his unwavering gratitude for the opportunities he has had.

 

“When I started out 26 years ago as a volunteer at the FIFA U20 World Cup that Nigeria hosted, I never dreamed of reaching these heights,” Pinnick said. “I never thought I could become the number one administrator of football in Nigeria for eight years, play key roles in African football, and easily mingle with the world’s top football governors. I have only gratitude to give to the Almighty God and to those who have helped me along the way.”

 

Pinnick, who previously served as First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian government, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and key sports administrators like Shehu Dikko and NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau for their unwavering support.

 

“I am drawn to tears by the support of President Tinubu, right from the time he publicly endorsed my candidature. I am most grateful and do not take anything for granted,” he stated. “I cherish my relationship with Gianni Infantino and appreciate his sincerity. The National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko, and the NFF, particularly Ibrahim Musa Gusau, were amazing in their push. Kudos also to my friends in government and the corporate world.”

 

Reflecting on his football administration career, Pinnick recalled how fate had propelled him beyond his initial role as chairman of the NFF electoral committee in 2014.

 

“I was to be no more than the head of the NFF electoral committee back in 2014, but fate catapulted me to the presidency, and I became the youngest-ever Nigerian in world football’s supreme council. I am more than fulfilled.”

 

Though the loss of his FIFA Council seat was a setback, Pinnick remains resilient and determined to continue contributing to football development globally.
