Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has rallied support for the Super Eagles following Nigeria’s painful elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, urging the team to remain resilient and focused despite the setback.

 

Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup were dashed on Sunday at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the Eagles played out a tense 1–1 draw with DR Congo over 120 minutes before falling 4–3 in a dramatic penalty shootout. The result marked the country’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the mundial.

 

Reacting to the loss in a post on his X account on Monday, Obi acknowledged the emotional weight the defeat carries for both the players and millions of Nigerians. He commended the team’s commitment and the sacrifices made while representing the nation.

 

“Our dear Super Eagles, I know how deeply yesterday’s outcome weighs on each of you,” he wrote. “When you wear the green and white, you carry the heartbeat of the whole nation, and I acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment you put into every match.”

 

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, encouraged the players to view the disappointment as an opportunity to rebuild with renewed focus, noting that strong teams are defined by their response to adversity.

 

“But let this moment not break your spirit. Great teams are defined by their response to adversity,” he said. “What matters now is how we stand, regroup, and rebuild with even greater discipline, focus, and preparedness. I am confident you can rise stronger.”

 

He further reminded the team that Nigerians still believe in their potential despite the heartbreak of Sunday night. “Do not let today overshadow the greatness of tomorrow. The Eagle never bows its head; it lifts its wings. Keep your heads high and stay committed. Nigeria believes in you, and together, we will soar again. Keep soaring, Super Eagles.”

 

The defeat has divided opinions across the country, with some fans criticizing the team’s lack of urgency and cohesion, while others argued that the players showed enough fight but were ultimately undone by misfortune during the shootout.
