Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has reaffirmed his commitment to integrity, nonviolence, and democratic ideals throughout his political career, asserting that his record is free from thuggery, electoral malpractice, or manipulative tactics.

In a detailed statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor threw down a challenge to Nigerians and political observers: scrutinize his past, and no blemish will be found.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice,” Obi wrote. “I challenge anyone: conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.”

Obi emphasized that even in high-stakes electoral contests, he has remained committed to civility and fair play. “Ask those who have contested against me—none were ever denied their rights, framed, or falsely accused. None was asked to place their advert materials or break the bank to do so. I believe in fair competition, not manufactured victories,” he added.

The former governor, widely praised for his disciplined political style and focus on governance, rejected desperation or personal ambition as motivations for his political aspirations.

“I do not engage in aggressive rhetoric, personal attacks or unrealistic promises,” he said. “What drives me is a commitment to seeing Nigeria work, not personal ambition. Leadership must be built on service, integrity and accountability.”

Obi also addressed growing speculation around his political plans for 2027, reaffirming a one-term presidency promise if elected.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation,” he said. “By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months.”

He cited examples of national priorities that could be tackled decisively within a single term, including tackling corruption and redirecting wasteful spending.

“For instance, the trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” Obi noted. “Within the same period, we can ensure that the rule of law is strictly followed.”

Obi’s latest statement comes amid a charged political atmosphere, as discussions around the 2027 elections begin to heat up. His insistence on a clean record and minimalist approach to power continues to set him apart in Nigeria’s often turbulent political landscape.
